Map Reading
Age and Number of campers: Trailblazers, groups of 2-3
Requirements:
• Markers/pens/pencils
• Maps (see last page)
How to play:
1. Ask a member of the Support Staff to photocopy some of the work sheets on the last page (one page per week so that campers who return are not always getting the same maps).
2. Have campers fill out the work sheets as the questions ask. Help them with any questions. Add questions if they are going fast, or any other challenges you can come up with.
3. Campers should work together in groups of 2-3 and talk to problem solve.
Rules:
1. Must work together in group.
What can we do next:
Campers can now start to create maps using the skills they have learned about reading maps.
Mapping
Age and Number of campers: Trailblazers, groups of 3-5, at least two groups
Requirements:
• Blank paper
• Markers/pens/pencils
• Site map
How to play:
1. Show campers a site map and tell them they can choose where to make a map of. Options can be Versailles, Safety Village, Bike Wash/Playground, or the Waterfront (or anywhere else you feel comfortable taking them, but be sure to tell someone on Support Staff where you are going!). Campers should work together in groups of 3-5.
2. Campers are going to draw a map of an area. Go to a location within the site boundaries and explain what campers will be doing. They can use trees, man-made landmarks, and any other landmarks to make their map.
3. Ask them to count the number of trees, doors, windows, and anything else that seems important, and include that on their map.
4. They should try and draw a birds-eye-view as if it was a real map. Show them the site map as an example.
Rules:
1. Must stay within camp boundaries
2. Must work together in group
What can we do next:
Next, campers can start orienteering activities and use the skills they learnt with compasses and maps to help them understand the upcoming challenges.
Treasure Hunt
Age and Number of campers: Trailblazers, groups of 3-5, at least two groups
Requirements:
• Maps they just created
• Markers/pens/pencils
• Site map
How to play:
1. Campers take the maps they just created in Mapping. In their groups, they are going to hide an object somewhere in the location where the map was created. They mark on their group’s map where they hid the object then pass off the map to the other group. The goal is to have the other group find the object using the newly drawn map.
2. Come back together after all groups have found the objects. Ask the group members if it was easy to use the map and find where the object was hidden. How can we improve our maps?
3. Play another round after maps are improved and see if it is easier for the groups to find the objects. Keep playing and adjusting the maps until everyone agrees that the maps are good.
Rules:
1. Must stay within camp boundaries
2. Must work together in group
What can we do next:
With these new skills, campers are going to be able to read maps much easier since they have created their own. If the group is very advanced, counsellors could bring in a map of Fanshawe/London and ask questions that are similar to those in the activities on the last few pages of this curriculum.
